Smoke & Ladder

Our Story

OUR STORY

More Than a Cigar Company

Smoke & Ladder Cigar Co. was founded on a simple belief:

Nobody should have to fight their battles alone.

For most people, a cigar is a way to relax after a long day.

For us, cigars became something more.

They became a reason to slow down.
A reason to sit down with friends.
A reason to have conversations that might not happen otherwise.

Sometimes that conversation can change a life.

Where It Started

My name is Bill Knapp.

I knew I wanted to be a firefighter when I was 14 years old. By 15, I was a cadet and eager to serve my community.

Like many first responders, I grew up believing the job was about being a hero. What I eventually learned was that the job is really about showing up on the worst days of people's lives.

Over the years I saw things that most people never have to experience.

Like many first responders, I convinced myself I was fine.

We joked about it.
We buried it.
We carried it.

And we kept moving.

Until one day I realized some of those calls never really left.

The Reality Nobody Talks About

Mental health struggles among first responders are real.

We've lost too many firefighters, police officers, dispatchers, EMS professionals, military veterans, and friends because they felt they had nowhere to turn.

For generations the culture told us to:

"Man up."

"Deal with it."

"Don't talk about it."

The problem is that carrying everything alone eventually becomes too heavy.

I know because I've lived it.

There was a point in my life when burnout, stress, and years of accumulated trauma caught up with me.

What helped wasn't some magical solution.

It was a conversation.

One trusted person who listened.

One brother who understood.

One person who reminded me I wasn't alone.

Sometimes that's all it takes.

The Power of Brotherhood

A premium cigar won't solve your problems.

But what it can do is create something that's becoming rare in today's world:

Time.

Forty-five minutes without distractions.

Forty-five minutes sitting with people who genuinely care.

Forty-five minutes to talk, listen, laugh, vent, and connect.

The cigar community gave me that.

It gave me friendships.

It gave me perspective.

It gave me a place where conversations happened naturally.

Most importantly, it reinforced something I already knew:

People heal through connection.

Why Smoke & Ladder Exists

Smoke & Ladder was built to bring those two worlds together.

The brotherhood of the fire service.

And the brotherhood of the cigar community.

Our mission is simple:

Use premium cigars to create conversations that save lives.

Every cigar we sell helps us support initiatives that promote first responder mental health awareness, education, and outreach.

Every shirt we print.

Every event we host.

Every conversation we start.

It all serves the same purpose.

To remind people that asking for help is not weakness.

It's strength.

Check On Your People

This phrase has become more than a slogan for us.

It's a challenge.

Check on the strong ones.

Check on the ones who always seem fine.

Check on the ones who are always helping everyone else.

Because sometimes the people carrying the heaviest burdens are the ones who never ask for help.

If Smoke & Ladder can encourage one conversation, one phone call, one check-in, or one person to seek help, then we've done something worthwhile.

Our Promise

We'll always make great cigars.

We'll always honor the traditions of the fire service.

But we'll never lose sight of why this company exists.

Because behind every cigar is a mission.

Behind every conversation is a person.

And behind every person is a story worth hearing.

In all the chaos, help is only a phone call away.

Check on your people.
